Aims and Scope

  • The Hong Kong Journal of Japanese Studies (HKJJS) is an annual journal that publishes current research in all aspects of Japanese Studies, including but not limited to the following: Anthropology, Arts, Ethics, Gender Studies, Geography, History, Linguistics, Literature, Media, Philosophy, Sociology, and Translation.
  • The Journal is supported by a voluntary editorial board of postgraduate students from the Department of Japanese Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
  • We welcome submissions from all scholars working in fields related to Japanese Studies and accept submissions in English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese. We particularly encourage submissions from early-career scholars, postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students.
  • We accept submissions in a variety of formats, including research articles, literature reviews, book reviews, brief reports, photo essays, reflective travelogues, and research notes.

Peer-Review Policy

  • For academic articles, the Journal adopts a double-blind peer review policy.

Copyright and Licensing

  • Copyright of all articles published in the Journal remains with the author.
  • Our content is published under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). For details, see https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/legalcode. Permission to electronically forward content to others and post HKJJS texts for non-commercial purposes is granted following Creative Commons guidelines, provided the content is reproduced intact, with the source indicated and link provided.
  • All submissions must be works of original scholarship that have not been submitted elsewhere for publication in substantially similar form. Authors are required to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations. Violation of any of these conditions will lead to rejection.

  • The Journal does not charge an article processing fee for publication.

The Hong Kong Journal of Japanese Studies (HKJJS) is currently seeking submissions for its first issue, which is scheduled to be published in January 2025. We welcome submissions from all researchers in Japanese Studies and particularly encourage submissions from early-career scholars, postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students.

            We welcome a wide range of formats including but not limited to:

  • Research articles – Double-blind peer-reviewed articles that present original research and engage with the existing scholarship in Japanese Studies.
  • Literature reviews – Summaries of preliminary findings, methodological approaches, or theoretical frameworks
  • Book reviews – Critiques of recent publications or classics which are relevant to Japanese Studies
  • Brief reports – Reports on activities, conferences, lectures, events, and archival research related to Japanese Studies
  • Photo essays – Visual explorations of contemporary issues in Japan
  • Reflective travelogues – Accounts of personal experiences and observations from study tours in Japan
  • Research notes – Discussion notes on current research in the early stages of idea conceptualization that are intended to advance a new concept, theory, or methodology in the field of Japanese Studies

Submission Guidelines:

  1. Submissions should be original and unpublished work.
  2. Manuscripts must be submitted in English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, or Simplified Chinese.
  3. Academic articles should be under 13,000 English words or 15,000 Chinese/Japanese characters (no spaces), excluding footnotes and references. There are no word limits for submissions in other formats, such as literature reviews, book reviews, brief reports, photo essays, reflective travelogues, and research notes, but they should not be longer than necessary.
  4. Academic articles should follow the style guide for the corresponding language.
  1. All submissions should include a separate title page with the author’s name, institutional affiliation, email address, and a brief self-introduction.
