Q1: What programmes are currently offered?
We offer the Articulated MPhil/PhD in Japanese Studies programme in both full-time and part-time study modes.
Q2: Is there financial support available?
- Full-time students: Eligible for a monthly studentship (approx. HK$19,100 in 2026/27, subject to annual review) during the normative study period.
- Part-time students: Admitted on a self-financed basis.
Q3: What are the application deadlines for 2027-28 admission exercise?
- Main Round: 1 December 2026 (Early applications by the main round deadline are strongly encouraged to ensure full consideration by the selection panel.)
- Clearing Round: 31 March 2027 (subject to availability of unfilled places)
Q4: Is there an information session?
Yes! We organize online information session in October/November every year. Please refer to announcements on the Department website and social media for updates.
Q5: Can I apply through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)?
Yes, applicants with strong academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply via HKPFS.

- Note: Unsuccessful HKPFS applicants will still be considered for the regular PhD programme.
Q6: What documents are required for application?
- JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) certificate if available
- A 5-page research proposal in English
- Optional: Up to two academic writing samples (in English, Chinese, or Japanese)

Q8: Is Japanese language proficiency required?
Japanese language proficiency requirements may vary according to the areas of study and the content of the research proposal and is to be decided by the Graduate Panel. While a JLPT certificate is not mandatory, applicants should have a sufficient level of Japanese to conduct their proposed research. If no JLPT certificate is available, please describe and provide evidence of your Japanese language education background in your application.
Q9: Do I need to find a supervisor before applying?
No. Supervisors will be assigned based on your research area and faculty availability. However, you are welcome to contact professors whose research aligns with your interests.
